Charles N. Peay, Jr., of Ackerman, MS, passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 28, 2021, at Kosciusko, MS, VA Home. He was born February 2, 1930, to Charles, Sr., and Trannie Ozelle(Whitlock) Peay. He was 91 years old.
Mr. Peay was a wonderful father, patriot, war hero, and God-fearing Christian. He was born in Cottonplant, MS, but lived many years in Alabama and Michigan. He was a Korean War Veteran having served with the 25th Infantry Division, recipient of the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Mr. Peay was a Combat Medic in the United States Army during the war and had also served in the Navy Reserves prior to this. He and his family moved to Mississippi in 1976 leaving employment at General Motors in Detroit, MI. Upon arriving in Ackerman, he served as a police officer, worked at the Steel Mill, and later at TMA where he retired. He also served in the Mississippi State Guard retiring as Colonel and served as a volunteer fireman for over 42 years. He was always giving, polite, friendly, and caring to everyone in the community. His favorite hobbies were gardening, making sure there were always Vidalia onions for Margret, and an extra row or two of cucumbers for Charles to take downtown and sell. He also enjoyed ham radio. His call sign was WD5GHH, and he was an affiliate of the Army MARS Network. He enjoyed fishing with his wife and parents, and often deer hunted as well. Above all, he loved his children. No matter the struggle, pain, or discomfort, nothing hindered his love and devotion to his children. Even at 85 years, he drove his son, John, numerous times to Jackson, MS, for cancer treatments, and took care of him in his last days. He also, at a very old age, spent many years installing Life-Lines for the elderly.
Mr. Peay is survived by 3 sons, Charles Peay of Las Vegas, NV, Terry Peay of Glenmore, PA, Kenny Peay of Goshen, IN; 3 daughters, Michelle Dabney of Tucson, AZ, Joan Hulbert of Newport Beach, VA, Barbara Dunbar of Virginia Beach, VA; 1 beloved niece, Catherine(Bill) Brickhill of Bartlett, TN, who played an important part helping in the last days of his life, while also caring and attending to her own father, Clifford,(Mr. Peay's brother), who passed away just two days after Mr. Peay. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and several great-grands.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Margret Peay, his parents, Charles N. Peay, Sr., and Trannie Ozelle(Whitlock) Peay, 1 son, John Peay, and 1 brother, Clifford Eugene Peay who passed away in Brooklyn, MI, just two days after his own death.
Services will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Danny Irvin officiating. Visitation will be held for 1 hour prior to service time.
