In Loving Memory of David Thurmon Jr.
March 4, 1963 – January 16, 2026
David Thurmon Jr., a devoted servant of God, a proud veteran, and the ultimate family man, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026. Born in Amarillo, Texas, on March 4,1963, David lived a life defined by his faith, his sense of humor, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved.
A Life of Service and Faith
David was a man who wore many hats, but perhaps none so proudly asPapaw, his military uniform and his Sunday suit. A veteran of the United States Air Force, David served his country with honor before answering a different call to service. As the preacher at Wake Forest Baptist Church, he was a pillar of strength and spiritual guidance for his congregation, sharing a message of grace and compassion with everyone he met.
The Heart of the Family
To his family, David was more than a preacher; he was their “big, hairy, scary guy” and their "Mr. Fix-it" Whether he was repairing a leaky faucet or mending a broken heart, David was always the first to show up with his tools and a joke. He was a notorious jokester who believed that laughter was the best medicine, and he used his wit to light up every room he entered.
Above all, David fiercely loved his family. He shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Beth, and together they built a legacy of love that spans generations.
Family Legacy
David is survived by:
• His Wife: Beth Thurmon
• His Children: Mari and Buddy Walker, Rachel and Steven Cameron, and Aaron and Chelsea Thurmon
• Grandchildren: 10 beloved grandchildren
• Great-Grandchildren: 5 precious great-grandchildren
• Sister: Leslie Richey
Reunited in Peace
David was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Carlock; his fathers, David Thurmon Sr. and Randy Carlock; his sister, Connie Thurmon; and his cherished grandbaby, JC Thurmon. We take comfort in knowing they are reunited in the arms of the Lord.
"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!'" — Matthew 25:23
