Frances P. Gilliam

January 6, 1931 — June 18, 2025

Starkville, MS

Frances Pitts Gilliam, 94, went to be with her Savior on June 18, 2025. She was born on January 6, 1931 in Bradley, Mississippi to Oscar and Hazel Pitts. She grew up in Oktibbeha and Choctaw counties. She graduated from Sturgis High School in 1949. She married Dewitt Gilliam on October 9, 1949. They were married 63 years until his death in 2012.

Dewitt joined the Air Force early in their marriage. This provided the young family an opportunity to experience living in other places. They were stationed in Mississippi, Florida, England, Korea and California. After retiring from the Air Force, they enjoyed touring the United States in their camper. Frances also enjoyed traveling abroad to Israel and Europe. Frances thoroughly enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening and canning. She was well known for her famous fried peach pies. One of her favorite pastimes was to sit on the gazebo that Dewitt built and read the Bible and do word searches. She loved teaching the Adult Sunday School class at Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman, Mississippi for many years.

Frances dearly loved her family. She is survived by a sister, Dolly Anders; two brothers, Burnell Pitts (Kathy) and Arch Pitts (Theresa); two sons, John Gilliam (Dianna) and Steve Gilliam (Janice); and a daughter, Laura Jordan. She is also survived by her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death were her parents; husband, Dewitt; and her son-in-law, Dale Jordan.

The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the thoughtful and caring staff of The Carrington Nursing Home.
