Mary Maxine Phillips

Mary Maxine Phillips, 92, of Fentress passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 4, 2026.

She was born on May 19, 1934 to Maxie M. McCool and Della Whitten McCool. She was married to Stanley Frank Phillips on June 6, 1953. They spent the first few years of their married life in the military, finally settling in Fentress near family. They shared 71 years of marriage until his death in 2025.

She was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Fentress Baptist Church, always served where needed. She spent her whole life taking care of family, friends and neighbors. Everyone was welcome at her home and table. She always planted a large garden so that anyone who needed food would have plenty.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, her parents, Maxie and Della and her siblings, H.G. McCool, Roy McCool, Harold McCool and Virginia Sims.

She is survived by her children, Debbie Jones (Lee) of Brandon, Teresa Nowell (Jackie) of Stewart and Frank Phillips of Brandon. Grandchildren – Andy Jones of Madison, Sam Whitmire of Huntsville, Al., Evan Jones (Meghan) of Brandon, and Jamie Whitmire (Rachel) of Hamilton.

She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren: Imilie, Jackson, Hunter, Andrew, Charlotte and Madeline and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Halcyon Hospice, Staff and Nurses, along with her caregivers – Cindy Weeks, Sandra Whysall, Liz Holland, Ethel Rogers, Barbara Moore, Linda Black, Brenda Bishop, and the late Tina Hudson for their wonderful love and care for our mother.

Visitation will he held Wednesday, Sept.9, from 5-7pm and again Thursday Sept 10, from 9-11am at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, Ms. Funeral Services will follow at 11am in funeral home chapel with Rev. David Shivers and Ronnie Prewitt officiating. Burial will follow at Fentress Baptist Church Cemetery. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman will be in charge of all arrangements.
