Monty Yates Griffin

March 18, 1954 — July 18, 2020

Monty Yates Griffin died July 18, 2020 at his residence in Ackerman, MS. He was 66 years old. A private graveside service was held at 11:00 am Tuesday, July 21, at Salem Cemetery in Choctaw County with Reverend Jerry Davis officiating. Memorials may be made to the Salem Cemetery Fund, c/o Becky Orr, 625 MS Hwy 415, Ackerman, MS 39735 with Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman, MS entrusted with the arrangements.
Monty was born in Ackerman, MS on March 18, 1954 to Earl Dillard and Sudie Mae Wood Griffin. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Dillard Lee Griffin and George Earl Griffin.
Monty spent his entire life in Choctaw County, leaving only for his pursuit of higher education at Holmes Junior College and Mississippi State University. Upon return from college he began a career in accounting with Belwood Industries. Later work endeavors took him to the Ackerman Steel Mill and Capweld Industries.
Monty was a quiet, humble man who counted his family as his greatest achievement in life. On February 18, 1978 he married Sherry Black Griffin, who survives him. They were blessed in their 42 years of marriage with the arrival of their son, Samuel Earl Griffin (Elicia) who also survives him.
In addition he is survived by his sisters-in-law, Connie Ray Black and Cynthia Black Long (Bill), both of Ackerman. His last years were made bright when his two precious grandchildren, Sarah Beth and Sawyer James, entered the family fold. Monty also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Monty had a deep love for the creatures of God's Kingdom and often rode the country roads to deliver food to starving, abandoned animals. Monty and Sherry's home was graced through the years with a succession of pets that brought love and laughter into their lives. Monty's last pet, Skipper, was a constant companion for many years who never left his side. As Monty's health waned, so did that of Skipper who passed peacefully away in the same year as Monty.

In the last years of his life, Monty's physical health crumbled so that he was no longer able to leave his home. His hope continued, though, to give him strength as he made plans for the future where could walk once again and would attend church with Sherry.
Out plans are sometimes grandiose, but God's plans are even greater for today, he does walk….. with God, in a Heaven far more beautiful and spectacular than any church here on earth.
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." John 14:2
