Nell Y. (Scott) Fondren

January 23, 1946 — April 9, 2020

Nell Yvonne Fondren, a resident of Ackerman, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at Choctaw
County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Thursday, April 9, 2020, at the age of 74. At the
time of her passing, she was a member of Ackerman Baptist Church. Described by most who
knew her as "such a sweet lady," Nell had a big heart and would give the shirt off of her back to
just about anyone she met. She had a love for people and animals and had a way of making
everyone around her feel special. She truly loved unconditionally.
Anyone who spent time with Nell knew that she was strong in her faith and loved the Lord. She
had a passion for teaching Sunday School and helping others. Nell also enjoyed reading her
Bible, a good manicure, fried catfish, watching Judge Judy, and sitting on the porch working in
her puzzle book. She had a fondness for the color purple, ceramic dolls, and angels.
Nell was born on January 23, 1946 to Lavert and Lucille (Hunt) Scott of Sturgis, Mississippi. She
was a graduate of Sturgis High School. Nell later married Travis Marion Fondren of Ackerman,
Mississippi where they were both active members of New Zion Baptist Church. She was
employed at the shirt factory in Ackerman until its closing. After the passing of her husband in
1997, Nell moved back to Sturgis to care for her mother. During that time, she worked for the
Department of Human Services in Starkville, Mississippi until she retired.
Nell is survived by her son, Marty and his wife Kristi of Huntington, WV; her grandson Dalton;
brother James W. Scott and his wife Kaye of Huntsville, AL; her brother Ralph Scott and his wife
Debbie of Ackerman, MS; sister Ann Oswalt of Sturgis, MS; and loyal kitty Sophie. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Travis, who met her at the gates of heaven.
Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman is handling the arrangements. Given current national
conditions, there will be no visitation. An intimate graveside service with immediate family,
conducted by Bro. Danny Irvin, will be held at Double Springs Cemetery in Maben, Mississippi
on Monday, April 13, 2020. Donations in Nell's memory can be sent to Ackerman Baptist Church
(PO. Box 277 Ackerman, MS 39735) or New Zion Baptist Church (3933 Weir Salem Road
