Vera Katherine Tennyson Worrell - known as Mama, Grandma or Mamaw, Mama Vera, and Big Momma- was born December 11, 1935 in Choctaw County and went to be with the Lord on September 14, 2025. Vera graduated from Ackerman High School in 1953 as an Honor Student and attended HolmesCommunity College from 1953 -1955. She worked for Bell Telephone Company in Jackson from 1955 -1958. In 1958, she moved back to Choctaw County and worked for the Four County Electric Power Company the next 33 years.
After her retirement in 1993, she stayed busy making porcelain dolls and quilts for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for people, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, and teaching her grandchildren how to make biscuits and dumplings! She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and “good singing” which was Gospel music. She attended FentressBaptist Church and taught a Children’s Bible Class. Later she attended Old Lebanon Presbyterian Church and thoroughly enjoyed Old Lebanon Camp Meetings. She and Pop couldn’t wait to move into their tent and enjoy the week of church services, singing, and socializing!
On March 28, 1958, Vera Katherine married Gladney Worrell. They had 2 sons, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. One of her goals was live to see the birth of her new great granddaughter Eliana Grace who is due at the end of this month.
She is survived by her sons Eugene (Bettye) and Kevin (Barbara); her grandchildren Jennifer (Nathan) Easterwood, Joshua (Miranda), Sara, Jonathan (Cheryl), and Nathaniel (Lauren); her great grandchildren Mason and Emily Easterwood, Rivers, Noah, Rylan, Ramsey, Samuel, Hannah, and Sledge; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Vera Katherine is preceded in death by her husband, Gladney Worrell, her parents John and Juanita Tennyson, and her siblings Doyle, K.W., Georgia Busby, R.C., James, and Carrie Prewitt McAdams.
Her Bible verse for her family and friends was I Corinthians 13:13 -The greatest gift of all is Love.
Funeral services will be held at Old Lebanon Presbyterian Church near Ackerman, MS on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at 1:00 PM with Bro. Bob Schwanebeck, Bro. Gene Worrell, and Bro. Jerry Lawson officiating. Burial will follow at Old LebanonCemetery near Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS.
Memorials may be made to the Old Lebanon Cemetery Fund.
